The One where I started a blog

Dear friends and family,

I’m excited to share some big news with you.  I’m moving to Honduras!

I will be joining Paul and Jessica Davis and their four girls, to serve with the BVSA Travesía ministry team.  I was first connected to this ministry in 2013 while the Davis family served in Buena Vista, Guatemala with the first BVSA ministry started by Brock and Kerrie Johnson.  I fell in love with this ministry and with their goals of reaching a broken community for Christ and reaching a generation of boys who can grow up to be men of Christ and change the DNA of their community.  I saw God’s redeeming work in a very dark, rough environment and life has never been the same for me!  The Davis family has been in Honduras for over a year now with the goal of replicating the Guatemala ministry.  I was able to visit them in March and was excited to see all the potential in this beautiful, yet broken Caribbean village.

I have been on staff at Savannah Christian church for almost 11 years working with the latechurch campus as a Ministry Assistant.  My years at Savannah Christian have been invaluable in terms of learning, growth and discipleship.  I have been blessed to serve with some great men and women from whom I have learned what it means to serve with love, compassion and humility.  I have seen first hand what it means to have an urgent, all-encompassing drive for people to come to know Christ.

God developed my heart for Latin America and the Hispanic people soon after I became a Christian.  My first taste of this was in the summer of 2003 when I was a summer intern with Christian Missionary Fellowship International in Pachuca, Mexico.  This trip was one of the most impactful and formational experiences of my life.  God opened my eyes to a larger world and began to draw my heart towards Latin America.  Since that first trip, I have led mission trips to Mexico, Ecuador and Guatemala.  On all of these trips, I’ve returned home feeling like part of me was left behind and something was missing here.  Usually I dismissed it simply as the obvious emotional response from mission trips or the idea that the grass is greener on the other side.  But this feeling has only grown in recent years and I have come to believe now that this was God making me aware of a larger plan that he wants me to be a part of in Honduras.

I feel called to serve with BVSA Travesía and I am confident that God is preparing the way.  I am humbled and at times astounded to have this opportunity.  I have been praying for several months specifically for the ‘next steps’ in my spiritual life.  One day I was very bold with God and opened up and told him that everything was his.  And I meant everything:  my life, my stuff, my career, my health, my security, even my dog!  I knew it was a big thing to pray, but I was ready and anticipating big things.  I was still surprised when that big thing came in the form of an invitation to serve in Honduras!  Throughout this entire process of prayer, fasting and listening, this verse from John has been impressed upon my heart:

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that you should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.” –  John 15: 16

I am so excited to be joining the team that is there already!  My plan is to move down there in January 2017 and that is why I am writing you.  I’m asking you to be part of a team of people who will commit to pray for me.  Oswald Chambers once said “Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work.”  I can’t even imagine making this next big move without prayer and without the prayer of friends like you!  What I’m looking for are people who will commit to a time each week and dedicate themselves to praying during that time not only for this ministry, but specifically for me.  This is a huge step for me, and as I am confident in God’s direction in this decision, I’m asking you to join with me as I cover every decision, move and transaction in prayer.

If this is something you’re willing to fully commit to, please contact me (on the contact page) and let me know you want to partner with me in prayer. Please do not feel obligated to do so, only respond if you know you are able to follow through.

Thank you in advance for considering being a part of my team and for covering me in prayer as I follow God into this new adventure.

Blessings,

Jason
